& Major bookseller Barnes & Noble canceled a Black History Month effort
The store prepared to feature the recently jacketed books in its window display all month. But after significant outrage online, the company canceled the initiative midday Wednesday.
Author Elle McKinney, who is also Black, noted how Barnes & Noble chose to invest significant time and financing on making over “all these old stories by predominantly white authors including white characters” instead of put those resources into boosting Black authors.
“You need to look at the challenges currently facing writers from marginalized communities,”Frederick Joseph, who is Black and the author of the upcoming “The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person,” told HuffPost. “Instead of platforming Black writers throughout Black History Month, they’re essentially doing blackface. They’re using our imagery, our likeness, to still sell white narratives.”

About 76%of publishing market staff in the U.S. was white and 5 %Black in 2019, according to a study from Lee & Low Books released last month. The study results originated from almost 8,000 responses from employees at more than 150 publishers and literary agencies throughout the U.S.
“And yet, when the time comes to do something about it, throughout Black History Month, they effectively’ color-wash ‘the covers of books that really don’t need additional promotion. It’s frustrating,” Bruce-Eddings stated. “It feels like yet another instance of effective gatekeepers sitting around and concerning a baffling, tone-deaf decision, and being amazed by the immediate backlash.”
“At this point, one has to wonder if these are real oversights or determined publicity stunts,”she added.
Meanwhile, there are numerous groups working hard to promote works by authors of color, in addition to broaden racial diversity in the publishing market, such as Well-Read Black Girl, People of Color in Publishing and Latinx in Publishing.
Barnes & Noble to a demand for additional comment. & McKinney suggested Barnes & Noble reevaluate”what the canon classic is,”noting that many of the books they prepared to feature come from an era in American history when Black individuals were segregated and pressed out of education and work chances by law.
Carla Bruce-Eddings, senior publicist at Catapult, Counterpoint Press and Soft Skull Press, kept in mind how variety in publishing has “hardly moved”in the previous four years, indicating the Lee & & Low Books study from 2015, when 79% of releasing personnel recognized as white.
